What are IIDC and IIDC2? (No.1546)

IIDC2 is a standard developed by JIIA (Japan Industrial Imaging Association), which defines structures of camera registers for controlling camera functions and register address of them. IIDC2 is a successor of IIDC that is standard controlling protocol of IEEE1394 (Firewire) camera.
IIDC2 register map covers most of the function in cameras for FA and monitor, and has flexibility to add vendor’s original function.
IIDC2 does not provid library for accessing registers, now. User applcation should use register access functions that camera SDK provides for accessing registers.

Functions installed in conventional cameras differed depending on its vendor, and procedure for controlling these fuctions also differed depending on its vendor.
On replacing cameras of a system with other vendor cameras, user had to pay additional development cost for learning how to control replaced camera from scratch.
Standards in industrial camera field, IIDC and IIDC2, were developed for improving these situation.
IIDC and IIDC2 defined details of camera function, and allocated them to control registers, which allows applications to control any cameras supporting IIDC or IIDC2 by reading/writing registers defined in the standard .
